Thinking about getting admitted to the University of British Columbia (UBC), one of Canada’s leading institutions? You’re in the right place!

This blog is especially for students who may not currently meet UBC’s direct entry requirements—whether you’re graduating from Grade 12 with non-competitive grades, missing specific prerequisite courses, missing English proficiency, or are a mature student over 19 who hasn’t completed high school.

We’ll walk you through how the University Transfer Program can be your pathway to UBC.

College to University Transfer Stories

Over the past five years, nearly 30% of all students, and 40% of international students, pursuing a bachelors in British Columbia have gained admission to Canadian universities through a transfer program.

Many of our students have successfully transferred or plan to transfer to UBC. You can learn about their academic journeys by watching the videos below.

How Does UBC University Transfer Work?

Transferring to university through a university transfer program may sound complex and unachievable, but I assure you it’s not!

There are only two key things to keep in mind: the BC Transfer Guide system, and the fact that most universities in BC including UBC accept at least 24 transferable credits from other recognized institutions for most of their bachelor’s programs.

Let’s look at an example: transferring into UBC’s Bachelor of Arts: Psychology.

Alexander College (ALEX) University of British Columbia (UBC)
ENGL 100 (3 credits) WRDS 150 (3 credits)
ENGL 101,102,103 or 110 (3 credits) ENGL 1st (3 credits)
PSYC 101 (3 credits) PSYC 101 (3 credits)
PSYC 102 (3 credits) PSYC 102 (3 credits)
PSYC 217 (3 credits) PSYC 217 (3 credits)
PSYC 218 (3 credits) PSYC 218 (3 credits)
Program Requirements or Electives Academic advisor will provide suggestions

The table above shows which courses taken at Alexander College will transfer to UBC’s Bachelor of Arts: Psychology program. To be eligible to transfer to UBC, a student must complete a minimum of 24 credits, as shown in the table above.

If you want to check whether these courses are transferable to UBC, please use the BC transfer guide.

If you want to see different examples which cater to your situation, or if you want to contact one of our advisors for more information, please send us an email at info@alexandercollege.ca.

Even if you are a returning student, the Student Handbook is a great refresher for all the Student Support Services available to you as well as reminders on some of our college policies and facilities.

This blog will go over some of the things you can find in our Student Handbook.

Important Resources

Unsure how long the school term is? Confused on where to obtain your student ID? The Important Resources section of the Student Handbook contains links and mini guides on services and pages that are essential to every student at Alexander College.

For example, this section includes what you need to know about myAC and Canvas, two platforms that are vital for every student. These let students view and submit assignments, take online exams, view your grades, sign up for classes, and more.

Student Support Services

Alexander College is dedicated to providing a supportive learning environment which is why the College offers a comprehensive suite of services designed to support students on their academic journey.

The Student Handbook provides a handy graphic showcasing all of the services available to students that is also available on our website.

For example, did you know we have one on one tutoring at the Writing and Learning Centre (WLC)? You can also speak to an Academic Advisor as part of our Academic Advising services if you have any questions regarding your degree or courses.

If you are feeling overwhelmed, each student is eligible for ten free confidential counseling sessions with our Health and Wellness Counselors per year.

Adjusting to Canada

Aside from campus life and academic information, the Student Handbook also includes a section on how to adjust to life in Canada. Living in a new country can be a daunting task so this section includes some basic information about the languages and culture of Canada.

This section also includes important information about banking, housing, and transportation in Vancouver as well as some recommendations on places to visit and shop!

As a student at Alexander College, you may encounter barriers that prevent you from achieving your academic potential.

As a part of our Student Support Services, the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities (SRR) is here to assist you in reviewing the exceptional circumstances at the individual level.

Whether you need support in accessibility, exam conflicts, or something else, our support staff will be more than happy to assist!

The Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities is also responsible for upholding student policy.

This guide will go over the services Student Rights and Responsibilities offers and you can view the full details of their services on their page.

SRR Services

The Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities oversees a wide range of services that can be roughly divided into three main categories.

Student Accommodations

If you encounter any exceptional circumstances that present as a barrier to your studies, the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities may be able to accommodate you for the following circumstances:

  • Disability or Chronic Illness: If you have a condition that may require additional support, you can reach out to SRR who will curate a plan that is tailored to your needs to ensure equity and for your success in your studies.
  • Bereavement: The loss of a loved one can negatively impact a student’s emotional health, which in turn can affect their studies. You can request a compassionate leave request with SRR.
  • Exam Deferrals: If you encounter an extreme circumstance where you cannot write an exam at the regularly scheduled time, you may be able to submit a request for an exam deferral.

Conduct & Appeals

The Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities is also responsible for upholding policy regarding conduct as well as processing various appeals.

  • Attendance: At Alexander College, each instructor sets expectations for attendance and the consequences for not meeting attendance requirements. In exceptional circumstances, you can appeal to make an exception.
  • Complaints: If you notice something that can be improved on at Alexander College or if an aspect of the school has not met your expectations, you can submit a complaint so we can improve.
  • Grade Appeals: If you feel that your grade is assigned in error and all reasonable steps were made in trying to resolve this dispute before resorting to formal means, you can request a Grade Appeal.
    • Exam Viewing: You can request to view an exam you have written, whether its for personal reasons or if you wish to appeal a final grade.
  • Misconduct: The Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities is responsible for addressing behavioural misconduct which can be in many forms.

Academic Integrity

Academic integrity is an important part of academia and Alexander College strives to ensure that all students, staff, and faculty adhere to the same values.

You can also visit the Writing & Learning Centre (WLC) and Library to learn more about academic integrity.

WLC
  • Academic Alerts: An Academic Alert is issued when a student is suspected of plagiarism or cheating. Receiving an Academic Alert can have severe consequences .
  • Academic Appeals: If you received an Academic Alert and you believe it was filed in error, you may submit a request to appeal it.

Why You Should Contact SRR

The Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities helps students adhere to Alexander College academic policies and standards, many of which share similarities with other colleges and universities.

SRR Assistant Kayoko recommends students contact SRR if they ever have any concerns regarding academics or if they want support from the College. Being able to see students succeed is the goal of all staff and faculty at Alexander College!

You can get in touch with a Student Rights and Responsibilities staff member by sending an email to srr@alexandercollege.ca.

As an international student in Canada, your studies are very important, but you shouldn’t forget to enjoy life in Canada as well!

The Student Life department, often working in conjunction with the Alexander College Student Association (ACSA), plans and hosts a variety of events and workshops year-round.

These are designed to help students experience Canadian culture and learn about the cultures of other students.

This blog will go over some of the major events Student Life hosts as well as some of the features that enrich the student experience!

Student Life Features

New Student Orientation

welcoming a student during New Student Orientation

New Student Orientation is the first event students experience when they start their academic journey at Alexander College.

This event is designed to introduce new students to the services offered at Alexander College as well as help students familiarize themselves with the campus layout.

In addition, New Student Orientation is a great way to meet other new students and make new friends!

Convocation & Alumni Services

Not only is Student Life responsible for the first event welcoming you to Alexander College, they are also responsible for the last major event in your academic journey at Alexander College: Convocation.

During Convocation we celebrate all your achievements as a student!

Once you have graduated and officially become Alexander College alumni, you will still have access to resources and services through our Alumni Services.

Volunteer Services

Want to get involved on campus? Student Life always welcomes students who want to help out for events on campus such as New Student Orientation!

Not only is volunteering a great way to make wonderful connections with other students and staff, it also can be a great addition to your future resume!

Japanese Club

School Clubs

Aside from the Alexander College Student Association (ACSA), Alexander College also encourages students to join clubs that interest them.

Every term there is a selection of clubs ranging from cultural clubs, public speaking, games, and more.

If you can’t find a club that suits your interests, you can apply to start your own club!

Trips & Events

Interested in an upcoming movie or a trip to the mountains? Student Life hosts various events year-round that sometimes takes students off-campus to experience life outside of the classroom.

There’s seasonal events like bike rides in Stanley Park and tickets to the Canadian circus show Cirque du Soleil as well as year-round constants like movie night and hiking trips.

Attending events is a great way to experience life in Canada and make new friends along the way! You can check the Clubs and Events page to see what events are coming up.

Advice for Students

Student Life Officer Ana recommends students engage with campus life and join at least one club since life in Canada could be more than just going to school.

There’s so much learning you can do outside the classroom just by being involved in campus life!

You can find out more about Student Life by sending them an email at studentlife@alexandercollege.ca or by stopping by one of the Student Life booths on campus. See you there!
